"CHALLENGING TERMINATION. Often called the last chief of Shigom, Charley Gunter (sometimes spelled Gunther) led a group to a site near Lower Lake until Robinson Rancheria was founded. His father, a white man, started the Utopia mine in the 1890s but later abandoned his Indian wife. In 1975, as a result of Mabel Duncan, the termination of Robinson was reversed. In 1982, the tribe, with a federal grant, purchased 107 acres to re-establish a community near Nice. This created two tribal land sites. (Photograph by John Hudson, courtesy of Grace Hudson Museum.)
